Funerals
Funerals in Afghanistan generally follow the traditions of Islam. After someone has died, their body is washed by members of their family of the same gender. The body can be carried to a mosque by six close friends or relatives, or left at home while mourners go to the mosque for the funeral service. There, a mullah recites the prayer for the dead. As mentioned in The Kite Runner, it is customary for family members of the deceased to sit near the door. Bodies are never buried before sundown. It is believed by some that if a body is not properly buried the ghost of the dead will return. For the next year, family and friends host memorial dinners.
